April Fools Day

Posted on

April 1 is April Fool’s Day. According to Wikipedia, there is no concrete evidence as to the origin and how this day was marked as a day of fools. It is not a national holiday but it is celebrated as a day where people (if not everyone) plays all kinds of jokes and foolishness. Well, pranks, jokes, hoaxes are expected to be funny & good humored depending on  how gullible your friends, family, workmates or even a random stranger. This day makes a good excuse to join the band wagon of prankster, jokers and the likes (clown if you want).

So I’ve searched the internet and have picked some of the best April Fools Day pranks.

(these are in no particular order)

April Fool’s Day 1998: The Left-Handed Whopper

Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a “Left-Handed Whopper” specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.). However, the left-handed whopper had “all condiments rotated 180 degrees, thereby redistributing the weight of the sandwich so that the bulk of the condiments will skew to the left, thereby reducing the amount of lettuce and other toppings from spilling out the right side of the burger.

If I was a leftie, I’d probably would’ve fall for this :p

April Fool’s Day 2008: Flying Penguins

The BBC announced that camera crews filming near the Antarctic for its natural history series Miracles of Evolution had captured footage of Adélie penguins taking to the air. It even offered a video clip of these flying penguins, which became one of the most viewed videos on the internet. Presenter Terry Jones explained that, instead of huddling together to endure the Antarctic winter, these penguins took to the air and flew thousands of miles to the rainforests of South America where they “spend the winter basking in the tropical sun.”

Aren’t they cute?! If only penguins can really fly, they would be cuter! :p

Gmail’s homepage last April 1,2010 showed there seemed to be a strike going on, the vowels were definitely missing.

At 6:01 am Pacific Time, during routine maintenance at one of our datacenters, the frontend web servers in that particular datacenter started failing to render the letter ‘a’ for a subset of users. As error rates escalated, the strain spread to other datacenters. We worked quickly to avoid a cascading failure of the entire alphabet by implementing a stopgap solution that limited the damage to the letters ‘a,’ ‘e,’ ‘i,’ ‘o,’ and ‘u.’ As a result, we’re experiencing Gmail’s first temporary vowel outage. (We’re still investigating whether the letter ‘y’ is impacted and will post an update here shortly.)

So this is when “J3j3m0ns” were created. LOL ;p

April Fool’s 2010: Starbucks listens to customer request for more sizes

This is by far my favorite April Fool’s Day prank. Since I love coffee so much!

Starbucks announced today the introduction of two new beverage sizes in stores in the U. S. and Canada this Fall. The announcement follows a year of research and direct customer feedback through requesting even more choice in beverage size.

“Whether customers are looking for a large or small size, the Plenta and the Micra satisfy all U.S. and Canada customers’ needs for more and less coffee,” said Hugh Mungis, Starbucks VP of Volume. “Our size selection is now plentiful.”

Plenta™ (128 fl oz) and Micra™ (2 fl oz) cups arrive in Starbucks stores this Fall. Derived from Italian word for plentiful or small, the Plenta™ delivers coffee lovers record amounts of the world’s finest coffee beverages while the Micra™ delivers a quick and satisfying morsel of goodness.

The bigger the better eh?

I tried clicking the link but seems like Starbucks has removed this post. I would’ve loved to have a hot PlentaWhite Chocolate Mocha! :p

So there you have it, few of the craziest almost too good prank for April Fool’s Day that I (and I bet others) would’ve wanted for real. Do you have any prank or joke that you plan on doing today to someone? If so, be very careful about pulling it off ‘coz that someone might really think it’s real (especially pranks that are dangerous). But if that person really does fall for it, I would like to congratulate you in advance for a prank well done.

P.S. Don’t forget to say APRIL FOOL’S after your prank or joke or else your victim might kill you for it! ;p
